Houston is the largest city in Texas and the forth largest city in the United States. It is a lively city with a huge variety of recreational prospects and cultural activities aside from having a broad based economy.

Houston was founded by Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, the two brothers who made their luck in real estate in New York in l836. They were able to purchased around 6,500 acres with the purpose of forming their own city which they named after General Sam Houston.

It was in 1837 when Houston was incorporated and at the same the infrastructure of the city started. The same year, a mayor was elected and the Chamber of Commerce was created. The first business that was promoted was shipping and later by year 1860 Houston became the railroad focal point making the city the commercial center for export cotton to Europe.

Deep water port was created to expand the seaborne activities after the Civil War. When Galveston was hit by horrifying hurricane in 1900 the deep water port was quickly created. It was in 1901 when oil was discovered at the Spindletop oil field and in 1902 the Houston Ship Channel open Houston as a major growth center. It was in 1914 when President Wilson finally opened Port of Houston as deepwater port and it became the most deeply populated city of America in 1930.

Shipping sector declined during World War 2 since the ports on the East coast

dominated trans-Atlantic shipping though there was a huge growth in petrochemical sector.

Houston is now a rich city and became home to a wide variety of cultural institutions having about 7 million visitors yearly. Houston is one of the very few cities that offer continual dweller companies for all the main performing arts.
